What art should I choose for me?

Follow your heart and your gut instinct.

The colours sing in your eyes and may even bring to mind a special place or person. We may want to spend some time getting to know the artwork, and really look at it. The best paintings are the ones that tell me something a little different each time I see it. I might notice different things, or I might have a different emotion when I look at it.

You are going to want to look at every day, and love it.

Will this be a good financial investment?

The purchase should be because you’re deeply drawn to something, not market speculation. It is important to follow your curiosity and to understand your own intentions - if you are at early stages of art collecting it might be equally useful to look around and figure out what you like and respond to on your own.

Most likely the work will be displayed in your home, so make sure the work is something you’re happy to live with. So buy something that resonates with you.

Is the work unique or an edition?

When examining a piece of artwork, a critical question often arises: “Is the work unique or part of an edition?” This query delves into the heart of the artwork’s identity and its value both in terms of collectibility and cultural significance.

A unique work, often a one-of-a-kind creation like a painting or a sculpture, holds the essence of the artist’s singular vision and personal touch, making it highly coveted for its irreplaceable nature. On the other hand, an edition refers to a series of works, such as prints or casts, that are produced in limited or open quantities from an original piece, offering a more accessible entry point for collectors and art enthusiasts.

The distinction between a unique work and an edition not only influences the artwork’s market value but also shapes our understanding and appreciation of the artist’s intent and the broader context of the art’s creation and distribution.

Is the provenance of the work reliable?

Authenticity

There’s a risk that the artwork may not be authentic or may be a reproduction presented as an original. This is particularly relevant for works by well-known artists but can also apply to lesser-known artists.

Provenance

Verifying the artwork’s history and previous ownership can be challenging, which is crucial for authenticity and value.

As you would be buying artwork directly from Julie’s personal site, those concerns needn’t apply.

Even if you own an original piece, the copyright typically remains with the artist, meaning you might have limitations on reproducing the artwork.
